ENSEMBLES 2018
World Music Program Ensembles
Brockton School’s World Music Program (WMP) has been thrilling audiences in Canada and around the globe for over a decade. Their sound has been described as “otherworldly,” and audience members are touched by the spirit, energy, and passion of youth! "The energy and enthusiasm displayed by the World Music Program was incredible, eventually raising the entire audience to their feet in dance! From Coldplay to traditional African Shona tunes, the music was incredible! The musicians demonstrated a level of teamwork that saw the performance of the group raised to a level beyond the obvious excellence of the individual performers.” The WMP has as its highest aspiration the fostering of a compassionate, global consciousness. Over the years, the WMP has performed in Canada, China, Greece, the USA, Scotland, and England. The group has received invitations to perform in many festivals, including Scotland’s Aberdeen International Youth Festival; the International Sounds of Spring Festival at Carnegie Hall in New York City, where the group took home a gold medal; and the Summa Cum Laude Festival in Vienna, Austria. The WMP has played for Canadian heroes, such as astronaut Chris Hadfield, and paralympian Rick Hansen. The WMP completed their first studio recording with grammy award winning recording artist, Steve Smith. Twice the program has been recognized by the UNESCO-founded International Society of Music Education as one of the most exciting music education programs in the world. WMP students are most at home when they are sharing the joy of music, whether that be for an audience of 5,000 or a small gathering at an elder care home. The WMP contributes performances to events that support those living in poverty, those living in retirement homes, and those suffering from mental or physical illnesses. WMP students are excited to embark on their upcoming tour to Austria, the Czech Republic, and Germany, where they will perform at the Musikverein’s Golden Hall; retirement homes; casual and outdoor concerts; and a charity concert for victims of the Chernobyl disaster.
Adrian Dyck
Conductor
Adrian Dyck and Paige Freeborn are longtime life and musical partners with Masters degrees in music. In 2004, they took up the challenge of creating an ‘alternative’ music program for a unique and enchanting school in North Vancouver called “Brockton School,” an International Baccalaureate School. Alongside many years of cultural and arts education, governance, leadership, and performing, both nationally and internationally, they developed a music education program that supports and empowers students to live with awareness, authenticity, courage, and compassion. They are grateful for the opportunity to work with the extraordinary students, faculty, staff, and parents who support this inclusive and diverse program, which is contained within the unique learning community of Brockton School. The World Music Program includes eight different performing ensembles, including an alumni ensemble. Ms. Freeborn and Mr. Dyck have performed as professional soloists, conductors, and chamber musicians in Europe, Canada, the USA, and Asia. They have also performed with Canadian orchestras, such as the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, the Vancouver Opera Orchestra, and Lions Gate Sinfonia.
